The City of Los Angeles

The City of Los Angeles is a Mayor-Council-Commission form of government, as originally adopted by voters of the City of Los Angeles, effective July 1, 1925 and reaffirmed by a new Charter effective July 1, 2000. A Mayor, City Controller, and City Attorney are elected by City residents every four years. Fifteen City Council members representing fifteen districts are elected by the people for four-year terms, for a maximum of two terms. Members of Commissions are generally appointed by the Mayor, subject to the approval of the City Council. General Managers of the various City departments are also appointed by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the City Council. Most employees of the City are subject to the civil service provisions of the City Charter.
The new City Charter, effective July 2000, provided for the creation of a Citywide System of Neighborhood Councils. The goal of the Neighborhoods Councils is to promote public participation in City governance and decision-making process to create a government more responsive to local needs.

The Port of Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles, Southern California's gateway to international commerce, is located in San Pedro Bay, just 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
This booming seaport not only sustains its competitive edge with record-setting cargo operations, but is also known for its groundbreaking environmental initiatives, progressive security measures and diverse recreational and educational facilities. The Port encompasses 7500 acres, 43 miles of waterfront and features 27 cargo terminals, including dry and liquid bulk, container, breakbulk, automobile and omni facilities. Combined, these terminals handle almost 190 million metric revenue tons of cargo annually. Last year, the Port moved an impressive 8.5 million TEUs, establishing a new national container record once again. The Port is also home to the nation's most secure cruise passenger complex, the World Cruise Center.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Los Angeles International Airport is the world’s busiest origin and destination (O & D) airport. O&D passengers are those beginning or ending their trips in Southern California rather than using the airport for connecting flights. In total traffic, LAX is the sixth busiest airport in the world for passengers and ranks 13th in the world in air cargo tonnage handled. In 2008, the airlines of LAX served 59.8 million passengers and handled 1.8 million tons of freight and mail. LAX handled 70 percent of the passengers, 75 percent of the air cargo, and 95 percent of the international passengers and cargo traffic in the five-county Southern California region.

The City of Long Beach

The City of Long Beach, California is a municipal corporation formed in 1897. Long Beach uses the Council-Manager form of government. There are nine elected council members elected by the constituents of their district and a citywide elected mayor. In addition, there is an elected city attorney, a city prosecutor and a city auditor. Each elected official is elected for a term of four years. Council members representing the odd-numbered districts, the mayor and other city-wide officials are elected at the same time. Even-numbered districts are elected in a four year cycle two years after the city-wide elections.
The mayor and city council, the legislative branch of city government, are responsible for appointing two officials, the city manager and the city clerk. The legislative branch also appoints members of the charter mandated commissions and all other commissions and committees.

Trade valued annually at more than $100 billion moves through Long Beach, making it the second-busiest seaport in the United States. Everything from clothing and shoes to toys, furniture and consumer electronics arrives at the Port before making its way to store shelves throughout the country. Specialized terminals also move petroleum, automobiles, cement, lumber, steel and other products. A major economic force, the Port supports more than 316,000 careers and jobs in Southern California and 1.4 million jobs throughout the United States.
